Just scanning through Alexander Binder's blog is always mind-bogglingly amazing, but today I found this interview type thing he did a while ago where he is discussing one of his favourite artists Theodor Kittelsen that made me adore him a bit harder.

Hello, I would like to talk about #1 from Paul Paper on Vimeo.

The reason it made me love him longer is that I had been meaning to do a post of this guy as well, having been totally ended by his work in the Norwegian National Gallery on a recent trip to Oslo. The paintings that I saw there were a series that he put together, which were set alongside each other and seemed to give a slide show of a dark fairy tale. If you haven't seen his work already then you should definitely check him out.

I really like the picture that Alexander chose, but I thought I would post a couple of others that are my particular favourites. The second one I bought a postcard of.

It’s cool when a band takes a bit more time about doing their thing. A bit more pride in their appearance.Like the old dog, who has learned some new tricks.

Art-infused Lo Light’s MySpace looks like someone smashed mid-90s Angelina Jolie all over a quadratic equation. It’s a total contrast from the, occasionally (wait for it), blissed-out synths, and adds an unexpected eeriness to their overall sound. There's a strong feeling that the visual is just as important as all the other elements that inform their glitchagram of noise. A damn site more interesting than looking at all those long exposure, warm-washed colour photograph-toting doppelgangers that seem to think that you have to have that shit on your page in order to get people to turn up to your gig. These are a couple of my favourite images that they have posted. Oh yeah, their music is also very good, and with upbeat catchy song titles such as “Piece By Piece Into The Ants Nest I Go”, they’ve got all the bases covered.

I have no idea what this project was meant to be when it started out (I mean, I could guess from the title that it might have something to do with when a lad meets a lass), but I am seriously into it.
This blog was found when I was looking up Robert Frank's pictures. I'm not one for classic photography usually (I think I bought a poster of that Silver guys work in the fresher's week of University, but no one can be blamed for their convoluted choices in Uni, can they?), as I find it a bit too shiny, a bit too staged. This collection though looks a little more playful and a bit weird. Like this one below - half Hitchcock still, half parody of Paranormal Activity scene. So good. You should go check it out. So much photography that you see at the moment adorning the pages of all of your favourite hipster rags is either straight out of LA / Lower east side or at a "amazingly fun party" in a cave below a secret warehouse in east london - nice to see something from a completely different region of the world. Say no to boring photographs! Giasco Bertolli goes on weird missions all over the place, snapping away like a over amourous alligator as he wanders. To be fair, I'm not bowled over by a lot of his other photos - they're the kind of photoraphs that would send a clipboard-toting-photography-teacher into box-ticking-overdrive, but leave you with kind of empty feeling (well, they do me anyway) - but both his tennis court and swimming pool projects are off the chain!

There's something about taking pictures of stuff that anyone who lives nearby would totally walk passed and not look twice at that gets me so stoked. Lots of clean lines, angular shapes and symmetry. Yum. These two are a couple of my favourites from the projects.

aGAiN WITH THE LATENESS! Morgan Blair has been setting the underground Brooklyn art scene alight for some time it would seem, yet my knowledge of her was only realised just recently - I had seen the standout front cover of Small Black's EP a while back, but a severe bout of malaise must have taken hold and I explored no further. Ashamedly I now make it known how much I love her work. I'm usually not so into anything that could possibly be mistaken for dayglo, and I am certainly not into that twee oriental graphic shit you see on t shirts being sold in Camden market, but this seems to hit the nail right on the head for some reason.

I particularly like the installation-y stuff that shit did at someone's house in NYC. Psychedelic murals in your house = YES! Anyways, she's a real hooked up lady and you can find a million interesting links from her site/blog that will send you cascading down the social media rabbit hole. So check it out.

I adore everything I have seen Peter Sutherland do. His style is so gritty, yet he seems to find beauty in the most unlikely of places. The shoot he did not long ago for Vice, where he went to some wasteland in bum-fucked-America to take shots of the communities that were still lasting it out there was incredible, and the portfolio of his work still blows my mind whenever I look at it.

This post was actually going to be a pretty slating review of the latest project that I had seen him put his name to, but on further inspection I reckon it's pretty goddamn rad! Perhaps it's the jealousy that I've not got to go on a trip like that, or that I can't take pictures that good...either way, I'm sorry. Check out the SMOKE BATH.

I love my Dad, I really do. He's always been there for me and that, he's a good man, and he's like, well, my dad! But sometimes, just sometimes, I wish that my dad could be a bit cooler. I mean sure, Finance is a scintilating bag of exploding colours and loyal, inspirational characters, but sometimes I wish that he had been something a little more "right on".

I've been working this shit munching job for about 4 months now (my god putting a time on it was seriously depressing) and believe me some days, just making it to 5 o'clock takes the strength of mind of Charles Xavier. One of the things that I obsessively distracted myself with was a site that I heard of through a friend called Oh Goodness Greatness. It started out as a blog of this pretty righteous couple, who would interview their friends and friends' friends who worked in creative industries and lived incredibly interesting day to day lives. I can't even tell you how much this site saved me - just when you I was floundering in a cesspit of spreadsheets and recycled copy paper, it made me remember the reason that I am there - survival for the greater good. My favourite interview was with this ridiculously wise and interesting humanoid, Stevie Gee. His illustrations, humour and overall outlook on life are awesome. Back on track, the reason that I started with the whole dad stuff at the beginning of this wasn't the start of a wandering into realm of "dad love"...honestly. Stevie Gee set up a blog/illstrustration site called Get Goofy, which is a series of drawings and projects that he has done with his son. Seriously, Rad Dad of the Year Award has no competitors!

I've begun obsessing over skating again recently. Any one of the mates who I used to skate with would tell you that I was possibly one of the most incapable skateboarders who ever rode a whizz plank - however, a man can dream can't he? This is a really cool site for watching HD videos, and they also stream really fast which is always a plus after having to sit through hours of stop/start runs on youtube.

So, today hasn't been a very good day. At all. Proper Monday blues kicked in hardcore this morning/afternoon, and literally everything I interacted with seemed to kind of piss me off...ah well, at least tomorrow is Tuesday!!

So, I know that no one reads this piece of crap, and so there isn't the slightest chance that I was missed...but I don't care - I'm back and I've missed you!

My predicament of the lack of employment in my life, and the impending doom of having to go back here, has now been relieved! I now have a function and I'm, ever so sadly, loving it!

Anyways, back to more interesting and eye-pleasing matters - I am, as I have already stated many times, very behind the times when it comes to fun stuff, but I try...I really try. As such, in my quest for the radical, I came across this amazing (year old) new online zine ting. They interview photographers, post up links to other new zines and spread the word of interest things to do in Toronto, by the looks of it. Of course, as I was scrolling down I found out that Platform have discovered them before me, as usual, so my uncoolitude was once more reinforced. I swear those kids just don't sleep and look at fun things the whole year! At least their website is shit...I'm not bitter at all.

This lady's work stood out to me instantly as it reminds me of the work of a friend of mine mixed with that guy of Teen Sheikhs fame. I'm going to keep an eye on this one for sure.

Whilst bumbling across the world wide web, you occassionally stumble upon websites/blog/newsletters that by coincidence of name lure you in. Usually, this tends to get you nothing more than a scrappy 15 years old's angelfire attempt or a list of instructions for putting together your "Rolling Stone" flat pack furniture, but sometimes you get something so much more. This latest diamond in the ruff (that really wasn't not a vain stab at humour, I promise) really is the stuff of dreams. I was reading up on an organisation that I've got an interview with tomorrow morning (yawn), which happens to share the same name in part as this fine establishment, and in the course of my hopeless clicking and back buttoning this little beauty popped up to save my day! I've never heard of this particular breed, so it was as much of an education as a delight to the jaded eye. This is my favourite part of the website, where you can browse the puppies that will be available at 12 weeks, and which ones are strictly not!

I don't agree with the way the guy on the blog I robbed this video off writes, but he knows how to find a good video when he puts his mind to it. Some truly epic stuff here. My favourite part is at 1:19 when you can see what looks like shooting stars one after another cutting across the sky. Also, it has the added bonus of having some palm trees in the shot as well, which provides a nice contrast to all the built up cities in the majority of the film. Really cool. The music kinda makes you feel like the you've just watched a beautiful family film all the way to the end, and now your heart soars as you watch the ships captain go down with the boat as everyone gets up to leave the cinema...or something to that effect...

It's a pretty cool ongoing visual art performance in collaboration with New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority, Clear Channel Communications, and its selected artists. It turns really boring, basic billboards into something more exciting, but apparently, because of the large cost involved, these boards can only be used occassionally... It's a really cool idea though, and much more stimulating than looking at the shitbag Robert Pattinson's face on every tube wall I walk passed! Just try to ignore the Aphex Twin nightmare in the background

I'm not even sure I have to say all that much about this guy, as his work is more dramatic than any short paragraph I could ever put together. I was discussing his work with a friend and I came to the conclusion that although a lot of his pictures look like they came out of the black metal guide to enchanted forests, they show a lot of hope at the same time. Really interesting stuff, don't you think?

I also realised when I was just putting this post together that I kind of love pictures of pointed roofs and fairy tale houses...

Photographers I like Vol. 6: Anna Verlet

I haven't written anything on this section of my blog in a while, so I figured that it could do with an updating as I have seen rather a lot of wonderful photographs in the last month or so. This latest photographer, Anna Verlet, is something rather special. Obviously, living in the no-so-popular part of the east end of London, I don't get to see much greenery or nature (other than the odd tramp being chased round the pathetic patch of grass near my flat by a mean-looking, muscular dog), so her kind of photography is always a much needed reminder of pastures prettier.

She takes lots of pictures of scenery, lots of pictures of buildings and lots of pictures of all things North American, which I'm always a fan of. Of course, a lot of the pictures aren't breaking any new ground, but there is a weird focus on shape, which I really like. You can really see this in images like the one below...

I got really excited when I saw her picture of a theatre/cinema earlier, and I am seriously glad that I checked the rest of her work out. Maybe you'll like it too and we can share an oatie?

I found a fun new band! I found a fun new band! Weekend, aside from having a suprizingly terrible selection of photographs to choose from on their Myspace for this song, are really good. They only have one song on their myspace, but there's another better one that you can access via their blog website. They have droning voice and (cue 90s shoegaze reference) the twanging guitars of Guided By Voices, strange drums that sound like a drum machine, although are apparently the work of a drum kit, and are good chums with another good band Young Prisms. I might try getting a few words from them soon, so watch this space...
